The Real Madrid player is the first ever to reach 800 top-flight goals in a single season, but what does this mean for football?
Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for Spanish club Real Madrid and the Portugal national team. He is the first player to score 800 top-flight goals in his career.
Since rejoining Manchester United from Juventus in the summer, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 12 goals in 17 games in all competitions.
The figures are as follows: 1,097 games, 801 goals.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for Manchester United in a 3-2 victory against Arsenal on Thursday, becoming the first player in history to achieve 800 top-level career goals.
It was a classic Ronaldo reaction to recent allegations that his style of play would not fit new interim manager Ralf Rangnick’s pressing tactics, who was at Old Trafford for the first time since his appointment to see the Portuguese accomplish the extraordinary milestone.
And the 36-year-old had to have left an impression on the German.
Ronaldo’s double brought his total goal tally for United to 130 in two periods, with five for Sporting Lisbon, 450 for Real Madrid, 101 for Juventus, and 115 for Portugal.
In men’s international football, the Champions League, and with Real Madrid, he is the all-time leading scorer.
“You just have to sit there and go ‘wow’ and praise the man,” Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time greatest scorer, remarked on Amazon Prime Video.
“It’s all down to him. It’s tough to climb to the top, but it’s also difficult to remain there. You have to wake up every day and go, and the whole world expects you to perform every week. What he has accomplished is just incredible.”
Bruno Fernandes, Ronaldo’s United and Portugal teammate, added: “It’s incredible. We all know he’s getting better year after year, game after game. He want to be the best, and he has achieved this goal. He understands how to inspire himself.”
Is Ronaldo the all-time leading scorer?
Although there is no comprehensive database to determine the all-time leading scorer in football, Ronaldo is unquestionably at the top of the records for official games played at a high level.
Josef Bican, who played in Czechoslovakia and Austria, is said to have scored 821 goals in official matches, according to the Czech football organization. His goal total is listed as 805 in other places, although it includes reserve-team and non-official international goals.
Pele and Romario, both Brazilian superstars, claim to have scored over 1,000 goals between them, but when friendly matches are excluded, the figures plummet to the 700s.
Statisticians who aren’t official Pele (769), Romario (761), and Ferenc Puskas (both 761) are the players closest to Ronaldo at the top level of football, according to RSSSFexternal-link.
Lionel Messi is in second with 756 goals for Argentina (80), Barcelona (672), and PSG (672). (four).
Ronaldo has scored more than 20 goals against five Spanish teams: Sevilla (27 goals), Atletico Madrid (25 goals), Getafe (23 goals), and Barcelona and Celta Vigo (both 23 goals) (20 each).
He has scored in double digits against 19 different teams, including Tottenham Hotspur (11). He now has eight goals versus Arsenal.
On Thursday, his goals were a significant boost for Rangnick, whose new team went behind in dubious circumstances when Emile Smith Rowe scored while United goalkeeper David de Gea was hurt on the ground.
However, Fernandes equalized before Ronaldo scored after a feed from Marcus Rashford. The veteran then scored a penalty to win the game following Martin Odegaard’s equalizer.
Before Ronaldo returned from Juventus this summer, Fernandes was United’s penalty taker, but he was ready to relinquish the role.
“We didn’t have a conversation,” Fernandes said. “I missed the last one, so I trust him as much as I trust myself. It was Cristiano’s turn to take the penalty after I had missed the last one.”
So, what’s next for Ronaldo?
Rangnick will take over as Manchester United’s temporary manager until the end of the season, succeeding Michael Carrick.
Ronaldo, who is renowned for his high-pressing style of play, has done less pressing per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season than any other attacker, except those who have played less than five minutes.
However, Carrick, who left the club after three undefeated games as interim manager, said before the game that Ronaldo does not press.
“Rangnick doesn’t have to play Ronaldo,” argued Rob Green, a Radio 5 Live analyst and former England goalkeeper. He is free to do as he pleases.
“Will Ronaldo be able to press? ‘Look at the run I made in the previous few of minutes – the length of the field to get into the penalty area – I can do this,’ he added as he turned back. ‘I am capable of running.’
“He’s in good shape.” They’ll sit down with both of them – the manager and Ronaldo – and say, “This is how we’re going to do it.” ‘Are you ready to go on board?’
“I’m certain he’ll accept.”
